Metal Core Gyms

One half press release, one half elevator pitch, the following was created to serve a dual purpose:

  1. Content for a Kickstarter campaign
  2. To be used as a press release to get journalists interested.

We’ve had enough of rock hard abs, it’s time for some hard rock abs.

Metal Core Gyms set to become the world’s first gym aimed entirely at alternative subcultures.

Tired of jockeying for space with Jersey Shore wannabes and gym bunnies, the founder of Metal Core Gyms believes it’s time for a change. Metal Core is all about heavy metal, in every sense of the word.

Despite what most modern gyms would have you believe, not everyone who works out wants to listen to Flo Rida and ten year old trance ‘anthems’.

The brainchild of John Doe, a former heavy metal guitarist and longtime fan of alternative music, Metal Core aims to shatter conceptions about what it means to be a gym-goer.

Doe has the following to say about the current state of ‘gym culture’ –
[su_quote]There’s this idea that to go to the gym you have to conform to a set of unspoken rules – if you’re a woman you have to wear yoga pants and giggle your way through Zumba classes and if you’re a dude you have to lift dumbells that are twice your weight and constantly be swigging a protein shake that looks like mud. I don’t buy that. I want to create somewhere that you can listen to great music and work out without worrying about everyone judging you; that’s what this whole thing is really about. I want it to have the same community ethos that you feel at all great gigs.[/su_quote]

Niche gyms have been around for a while now – gyms for children and ladies only gyms are nothing new – but Doe’s desire to get fans of metal and hardcore music into the gym is a first in the fitness industry. Doe admits that the concept is partly selfish – [su_quote]Sure, I want to unite two of my passions; weightlifting and the alt music scene. But I also figure there are lots of guys and girls out there who would love to hit the gym but figure that they wouldn’t ‘fit in’. If Metal Core can get even a few of those people working out, I’ll definitely consider it a success.[/su_quote]

A few of the special features Doe hopes to feature at Metal Core include:

  • A wide range of pro cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights
  • A huge playlist featuring everything from math rock to Swedish death metal
  • A range of niche classes, from pogo-robics to circle pit circuits
  • A red lit Olympic swimming pool known as ‘The Bloodbath’
  • A quirky ‘diner style’ interior inspired by the best that the punk and metal subcultures have to offer.
